Gandhinagar, IndiaIFSC, GIFT CityFull-time

About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated Underwriting Intern to support our team in evaluating, structuring, and managing reinsurance treaty and facultative submissions. This role involves reviewing client and broker submissions, assessing risk quality and exposure, benchmarking terms and conditions against market standards, and helping prepare underwriting recommendations for senior underwriters. You will gain exposure to how underwriters balance risk appetite, loss history, and portfolio strategy when making placement decisions, while also developing a working understanding of treaty structures, coverage terms, and reinsurance markets more broadly.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support Cedant–LoB rating assessments by compiling and analysing public-domain regulatory filings (IRDAI NL forms, audited financials, solvency disclosures)
  • Assist in evaluating inbound treaty and facultative proposals against pricing adequacy, loss ratio trends, retention patterns, and portfolio concentration
  • Support capacity allocation analysis across proportional and non-proportional structures, including quantifying incremental regulatory capital consumed by prospective treaties
  • Prepare clear, decision-ready summaries of analysis for Underwriting, Actuarial, and Executive Technical Committee (ETC) review
  • Support claims monitoring processes, ensuring triggers are objectively assessed and payouts are accurate
  • Maintain and update internal registers (Cedant Rating Master, Claims Register, Accumulation/CAT databases) with accuracy and audit-trail discipline
  • Generate insights for market research, customer needs, and competitive positioning
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, collaborating with legal and compliance teams
  • Prepare reports and visualizations for internal and external stakeholders to communicate risk assessments and product performance

Must-Have Skills

  • Ability to code in Python for data analysis, advanced statistical modelling, and automation of monitoring workflows
  • Functional understanding of insurance fundamentals
  • Foundational understanding of reinsurance mechanics: proportional (quota share, surplus) vs. non-proportional (excess of loss) structures, and how capacity, premium, and capital relate to each other
  • Strong quantitative aptitude - comfort with statistics, probability, and numerical reasoning
  • Good problem-solving skills and ability to learn quickly in a fast-moving, cross-functional environment
  • Clear communication skills - ability to translate technical outputs into structured insights for internal and external stakeholders
